Robert Ivy Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Robert Ivy is being recognized as the first architect to receive the Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award. Ivy has worked hard as an author and editor as well as architect to achieve this award. He has achieved excellence in architecture, editing and writing. Ivy is recognized by members of the architecture community as a leader and an ambassador to his profession. This award is a crowning personal achievement.

Robert Ivy is a native of Mississippi who served in the U.S. Navy as an officer. He received his Bachelor of Arts in English through Sewanee: The University of the South. He went on to receive a Master of Architecture degree from Tulane University. Ivy is currently a member of the International Circle of Architecture Critics (CICA) and serves on the boards of four different architecture schools.


Robert Ivy is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Executive Vice President (EVP) of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Before coming to work for AIA in 2011, Robert Ivy received numerous awards for his work as editor-in-chief of Architectural Record. He is one of only seven architects to ever receive an honor by the national architecture fraternity of Alpha Rho Chi. AIA credits Ivy with the significant growth in their global footprint. Since Ivy joined, they have achieved the highest membership role in its history of 160 years. American architects practice all around the world. AIA currently has seven chapters globally including Canada and China.

In addition to architecture, Robert Ivy published an authoritative biography called “Fay Jones: Architect” which is currently in its third edition. The Art Library Society of North America has recognized the book about American architect as being of the highest standards in production, design, and scholarship.

A leader in the field of architecture, Robert Ivy is well liked among his peers. He has been recognized on many occasions for his outstanding work. It is an honor to receive this award.
