OSI Industries Demonstrates Environment Excellence Throughout Its Operations

OSI Industries is one of the world’s leading suppliers of quality and customized products in the food industry. It was originally founded in 1909 as a family meat market. Over time it became known as Otto & Sons as it gradually expanded. It took on its current name in 1975. It is a privately held company that is wholly owned by its chief executive officer, Sheldon Lavin. As of 2016 Forbes had it listed as the 58th largest private companies in the United States with a value of $6.1 billion.

Under Sheldon Lavin’s leadership OSI Industries is now a global firm with factories and offices in several countries around the world. In 2016 it made two major acquisitions in Europe. The first one was a food processor in the Netherlands called Baho Foods. The next one was a United Kingdom food processor called Flagship Europe. While OSI Industries already had a large European presence these acquisitions solidified them as one of the biggest players in the industry in Europe. They now have over 65 facilities worldwide.

OSI Industries has also expanded in the United States in recent years as well. One example of this took place in 2016 after Tyson Foods had decided to close one of their facilities in Chicago. They had stated eight months before that everyone at the facility, 480 people, would be losing their jobs. By the time the day arrived that the plant was to be closed down 250 people were still working in this facility. At that point OSI Industries stepped in and bought the facility for $7.4 million. Most of the employees that were still working at this facility were offered jobs with OSI Industries.

Over the years Osi Industries has won a number of awards. These have been for management of safety and health risks. They have also been awarded for their environmental stewardship. One example of this took place in December 2016 when they won the Glob of Honour Award in the United Kingdom. The British Safety Council had awarded this to just 18 firms that year. In order to win OSI Industries had to be audited throughout the year in all phases of their operations. It is an award that is given to those firm’s that have shown that their environmental management has been excellent for the prior 12 months time.
